What should a smoke shop keep in stock?

A smoke shop inventory usually runs in four tiers. The daily sellers come first: rolling papers and cones, lighters, grinders, pocket scales and butane, which are cheap to stock and ride along with most purchases. Next come the glass case and the wall: glass water pipes, hand pipes, silicone pipes, 510 batteries and dab tools, which carry a higher ticket but turn slower. Add-ons such as fragrance and hookah charcoal lift the basket. Vapor and nicotine products turn fastest but need a valid tobacco or vapor retail licence for the store address and a distributor cleared to ship into that state. Most lines are bought by the display or tray rather than the piece. A simple routine is to count fast lines weekly and slow lines monthly, and reorder at half a display. Salim Distro’s live catalog controls which listings, pack sizes and ship-to states are available.

A smoke shop lives or dies on what is on the shelf the moment a customer walks in. Run out of the papers they always buy and they find another store; stock forty pipes nobody asks for and the cash sits in a glass case for a year. This is a working smoke shop inventory checklist: every category a smoke shop, vape shop or convenience store counter carries, what to stock first, how each line is packed at wholesale, and how to count and reorder. Print it, walk the store, tick the boxes.

It is built from the categories in our own wholesale catalog, so every line links to real listings you can order.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the four daily sellers: rolling papers and cones, lighters, grinders and scales.
  • Then the case and the wall: glass, silicone and 510 batteries.
  • Then the add-ons: fragrance and hookah charcoal, which lift the basket without a sales pitch.
  • Vapor and pouches come last and only with a licence. They turn fastest but need a verified tobacco or vapor licence for your address.
  • Buy the display, not the piece. Most lines are packed for retail, so one display is one shelf slot.
  • Count fast lines weekly, slow lines monthly, and reorder at half a display.

Tier 1: the daily sellers

These sell every day, cost little to stock and rarely need a customer to ask. A store that is out of any of them loses the whole visit, not one item.

  • ☐ Rolling papers and cones: the most repeated purchase in the store. Stock the sizes your customers ask for by name, plus cones and tips.
  • ☐ Lighters: a tray at the till sells itself. Keep one classic tray and one design tray; add a torch for the customer who asks.
  • ☐ Grinders: a counter display of 12 covers metal 4-piece and printed styles. Add one electric grinder for the customer who wants it.
  • ☐ Pocket scales: small, steady and easy to forget. One or two models in the glass case is enough to start.
  • ☐ Butane: the lighter and torch customer comes back for it. Note that butane ships ground only.

Tier 2: the glass case and the wall

These carry the highest ticket in the store but turn slower. Start narrow and let sales tell you which styles to deepen.

Tier 3: the add-ons

These lift the basket. They rarely bring a customer in, but they leave with one more item.

  • ☐ Fragrance: Arabian perfume oils and sprays in displays of 20, placed where the customer waits at the till.
  • ☐ Hookah charcoal: if you sell hookah, the charcoal is the repeat purchase. Coconut shell charcoal, plus the ShishaX VOLTA electric heater for the customer who wants no charcoal at all.

Tier 4: vapor and nicotine

Vapor turns faster than anything else in a smoke shop, but it is also the only part of this list a state rule can change overnight. It needs a valid tobacco or vapor retail licence for your address, and the distributor must be cleared to ship into your state. Our checkout tells you, by address and before you pay, what can ship to you.

Before your first vapor order, read the licence requirements guide and the vape excise tax table.

How to count and reorder

  1. Count by display, not by piece. Note how full each display is: full, half or low.
  2. Fast lines every week. Papers, lighters, disposables and pouches.
  3. Slow lines every month. Glass, silicone, scales and fragrance.
  4. Reorder at half a display. A display that goes empty is a week of lost sales while the reorder travels.
  5. Write down what customers ask for that you do not have. That list is your next order.
  6. Cut what has not sold in 90 days. Do not reorder it; put the shelf slot to work.

Once your account is approved there is no minimum order, so you can restock one display at a time. To start, apply for a wholesale account. For a deeper look at each hardware category, read the smoke shop supplies wholesale guide; Northeast stores can see what ships to their state in the Northeast distributor guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should a new smoke shop stock first?

The four lines that sell every day without a customer asking: rolling papers and cones, lighters, grinders and scales. They are cheap to stock and ride along with almost every purchase. Add glass, silicone and fragrance next, and vapor once your licence is in place.

How many products does a smoke shop need to open?

There is no fixed number. A first order built from this checklist covers every category with one or two displays each, which is enough to learn what your customers ask for before you go deeper.

Can I buy vapes and smoke shop supplies on one order?

Yes, where your state allows vapor. Hardware, glass, lighters, papers and fragrance ship to approved retail accounts in every state. Vapor and nicotine ship only to states we are cleared for, to retailers whose licence we have verified. The checkout names any item that cannot ship to your address before you pay.

Is there a minimum order?

No. Once your account is approved there is no minimum, so you can restock a single display.

How often should I restock?

Count the fast lines, papers, lighters and disposables, every week, and the slow lines, glass and fragrance, every month. Reorder when a display is half empty, not when it is gone.

How this was compiled

Categories and listing counts were read from our catalog on the date below. Pack sizes are the ones on our product pages. The tiers and the counting routine are our own suggestion for a store building or rebuilding its stock, not a promise of what will sell in yours.
